YEE HAW!

This week we are celebrating Pioneer Days. Tuesday we are going to watch slack (preliminaries for the rodeo). Thursday we will have our Kindergarten Rodeo at the Kids Inc. building. It will be a lot of fun! Look for a slide show later in the week.

The Monkey Song

This week you are likely to hear your child sing a monkey song about the sound you make when you put O and O together. We are spotlighting the digraph oo like in book, cook, brook, good, wood, stood, etc. I will be sending home a stick horse pattern this week for our Kindergarten Rodeo. Be looking for it!

This, That, and the Other

This week we are focusing on the digraph th and the sound it makes in words like feather, this, that, there, thimble, think, etc. We are also learning about time and when things happen throughout the day. To practice this, ask you child to tell you when they do certain daily activities. For example, students go to school in the morning, go home in the afternoon, and sleep at night. We only have 25 days left of school...the time has flown by!

Shhhhhhhh

This week you may hear a lot of "shushing" around your house because we are focusing on the special sound digraph sh. You can explore this sound by talking to your child about things they would see at the ocean: shore, shells, shark, fish, shrimp, etc. We are continuing to study money including the names of the coins and their amounts.

Money Poems

This week we begin focusing on money. We are learning poems for each of the coins such as "Penny, penny, easily spent, copper brown and worth 1 cent." Ask your child to recite the poems to you. We are also beginning to learn our special sounds. This week we are focusing on the digraph ck as in duck.

We Know All 26 Letters!

This week we are spotlighting our final letter, Q. We learned today that Q and U are stuck like glue. You can practice this concept by having your child spell words with these letters in them: queen, quit, quilt, quiet. We have begun learning subtraction and are learning about Coast Guard rescue swimmers. You may hear the words Mayday! Mayday! around your house!

W is for Weather

This week we are spotlighting the letter W. It is perfect for this time of year. There are many words dealing with weather such as windy, weather, wet, warm, etc. We are also starting subtraction this week. I will soon post our Dr. Seuss photos!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

This week we are celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. We will be dressing up each day so look for pictures next week! We are focusing on the letter x, like the book Fox in Socks. We are finishing up learning the numbers 11-20 and different ways to count. Your child can count by 1's, 5's, and 10's to 100. Have them show you this at home!

J is for the Journey

We have come so far this year! We are spotlighting the letter J this week and only have 3 more letters to go. We are working on the teen number family in math. Please practice these numbers at home with your child. You can use beans or pasta to have your child count out certain numbers, like twelve or sixteen. It is also important to ask your child how to write the number they just counted.

V for Valentine's Day

In perfect timing, we are spotlighting the letter V this week. An easy way to reinforce this sound at home is to practice it while you make out Valentine's Day cards. Have your child read you the word "valentine" every time you see it. We are finishing up addition and moving on to numbers 11-20 this week. Check back later in the week for photos from our Valentine's Day party!

Finally, 100 Days!

Tomorrow we reach the milestone of 100 school days. The kids are really excited aobut it! We have learned how to count to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's. We are focusing on the letter Y this week and are beginning to learn to add. You can easily practice addition by having students add sets of toys at home.

This week we are spotlighting the letter E. It is the last vowel we have to learn! Your children are making tremendous progress reading. I am so proud of them! Keep reading the word lists and any phonics readers that come home. We are also focusing on measuring things in math. Soon you will be getting your project sacks for the 100th day celebration. Be on the lookout for those!

Back in the Saddle

We are back in the swing of things after Christmas break! This week we are spotlighting the letter Zz. We are also beginning to order things in math such as shortest to longest, biggest to smallest, full or empty, etc. A quick way to work on this is to lay silverware out for your child to put in order from shortest to longest or longest to shortest. You can also set different plates out and have your child put them from biggest to smallest or smallest to biggest.
