1st, 2nd, 3rd

This week we are beginning to learn about ordinal numbers which simply is places such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. An easy way to practice this skill around Christmas is to line up presents and ask your child which order they are in. For example, which present is 2nd in line? This is a fun way to practice this skill. We are spotlighting the letter Bb this week.

Shapes All Around Us!

We are studying figures in math such as cone, cube, sphere, and cylinder. These are hard words for children to say so when you see objects shaped as these, ask your child what they are. You can use many common items such as ice cream cones (cone), boxes (cube), balls (sphere), and canned goods (cylinder). We are spotlighting the letter Kk this week, too.

R is for Railroad

This week we are spotlighting the letter R. There are a lot of words that start with the letter R. An easy way to work on this letter with your child is to look at a railroad crossing sign here in town. Have your child point out the letter R and focus on the "r" sound as you say railroad! We are also working on shapes in math.

F is for Feast

This week we are spotlighting the letter F as in a Thanksgiving feast. We are learning about greater and less in math. You can practice this skill at home by setting out forks and spoons in different quantities and then have your child count them. Ask your child which group has more and which has less. You can use all sorts of things to practice: toys, movies, shoes, etc.

Sssssss

This week we are spotlighting the letter S. A great way to work on this sound is to give your child a word containing the "s" sound and ask them to tell you where the s comes: at the beginning or the end. Some words you can use are snake, hiss, boots, snow, supper, plates, etc. Just to be tricky, try the word spoons!

Patterns, Patterns, Everywhere!

We have started our math unit on patterns. An easy way to work on patterns is to ask your child about any patterns you see. It could be a striped shirt, a traffic light, bricks on a house, window blinds, etc. We are spotlighting the letter I this week. Lots of halloween words have the I sound: witch, icky, sticky, etc.

Where Does It Go?

This week we are spotlighting the letter Mm. We are also working on position words such as before, after, above, below, on, over, under, beside, left, right, etc. It is important for your child to grasp these positions. You can play an easy game to practice by having your child place a toy "under the chair" or "on the chair" or "to the left of the chair."

Happy Columbus Day! I am sure you noticed the "pirate" hats we made today after learning about Christopher Columbus. This week we are spotlighting the letter Nn. We just finished sorting in math. Don't forget that next week will be our parent/teacher conferences. Look for the note coming home!

Apples, Apples, Everywhere

This week we are studying apples and will be making applesauce on Thursday! We are focusing on the letter Pp as well as finishing up our work on the numbers 0-10. An easy way to practice the letter P and its sound are to use popcorn. Simply make some popcorn and talk about how it pops or is popping.

T is for Transportation

This week we are focusing on the letter Tt which fits in great with our theme: transportation! Many types of vehicles start with T: trucks, trains, tanks, tanker trucks, transporters, etc. Focus on the T sound if you see one of these vehicles. We are continuing to study the numbers 0-10 and are beginning to focus on the number words.

Mother Goose is Teaching Us!

This week we are studying different nursery rhymes. They provide lots of practice for your child. Our focus letter of the week is H which goes with Humpty Dumpty and Hickory Dickory Dock. We are still practicing counting which is found in One, Two Buckle My Shoe. Three of our four popcorn words (I, little, the) are found in Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Have fun this week revisiting nursery rhymes with your child!

G is for Guymon

This week we are spotlighting the letter G. A great way to focus on this sound is to work on where your child lives-Guymon! You can find g's all around town in store names. We are also working on the numbers 0-10 during September. Please practice counting items at home: plates, forks, chairs, etc.

This week we are focusing on colors and shapes. A great way to practice colors and shapes is to ask your child about street/traffic signs and traffic lights. We are spotlighting the letter O also. Continue working on the popcorn words I and am.

L is for Learning!

This is the first full week of school this year. Our theme this week is the alphabet with a spotlight on the letter L. A great way to practice this sound is to share a lollipop with your child. Ask your child to say "lollipop" several times focusing on the L sound. We are learning about the calendar in math including the days of the week and months of the year. It is going to be a great year!

Rodeo Week!

This week is our Rodeo week in celebration of Pioneer Days. On Wednesday, we will be walking to the rodeo grounds to watch slack. On Thursday, it is our Kindergarten Rodeo. We will be going to the Kids Inc. fields and participating in several events. Thursday is also the day your child will need to bring their stick horse. Please check back on Friday for pictures from our Rodeo!

Math, Math, and more Math

There is a website we use in class that is great for math review at home. It will allow your child to answer 20 questions free per day and it is divided by grade level and topic. Since we are studying money, the money section would be great to work in! The website is www.ixl.com. We are also working on the special sounds "th" and "oo" in phonics.

Sh.....Quiet

This week we are learning the special sound "sh". This tends to be an easy sound for kids because they have often heard it! A fun way to practice this sound is to play a game with your child where they can "sh" you when you are talking. This gives them a lot of practice! In math, we are still working on the larger numbers.

"ck" like a Truck

This week we are leaning about the special sound "ck." An easy way to reinforce this concept is to look for signs around town like "No Trucks" or "Truck Stop" or "Snacks." We are continuing our study of the numbers 11-19 in math. Don't forget: next week we begin with our Fridays off and we will not be making up any of the snow days.

We have finally learned all 26 letters and their sounds! We are now moving on to the special sounds we find while reading, beginning with the long vowel sounds. We also started focusing on the numbers 11-20 in math. Please practice counting this week at home.

This week we are working on the letter W. An easy way to work on this sound is to talk about the weather with your child. Lots of weather words start with w: weather, wind, warm, wet (rain), white (clouds), etc. We will also be starting subtraction.

This week we are celebrating a beloved author, Dr. Seuss. We will be dressing up, reading lots of his books, and having a fun time! We are studying the letter X this week so a perfect book you can read at home is Fox in Socks by none other than Dr. Seuss!

Jiggly Jello

This week we are continuing to study addition in math. We are also learning the letter J. An easy way to reinforce this letter and sound is to talk about food: how jelly and jam both come in jars or how Jello will jiggle. Don't forget to have your child read the word list that comes home!

V is for Valentine

There is no better week to be working on the letter V than the week of Valentine's Day! You can stress the sound V makes by talking about valentines, love, forever, etc. We are also beginning to work on addition. You can work on this skill by making two small piles of toys and have your child count both piles and then give you a total of both.

A Week of Celebrations

We have a very busy week...Monday is the 100th day of school, Wednesday is Groundhog Day, and Thursday is the Chinese New Year. We will be learning about each of these days so please ask your child to share with you about them. We are working on the letter Y this week and are continuing to study longer/shorter, larger/smaller, etc.

Small, Medium, Large

This week we are learning the final vowel Ee. We now know all of the short sounds and are practicing very hard at reading. We started comparisons in math today. An easy way to work on this skill is to lay out some of your child's toys and have him/her put them in order from smallest to largest, longest to shortest, etc. They can also do this with silverware at the dinner table.

This week we are learning the letter C which sounds like the letter K. To know which letter to use at the beginning of a word, we are learning the following poem: "C comes before i and e. K comes before the other 3 (a, o, u)." Please practice this poem this week!
